Health – Guidelines for Treating Migrants

For some time now, a national team of medical experts and researchers has been working to create a detailed resource for doctors and nurse practitioners serving patients not born in Canada. Here is the result of these efforts to meet the challenges of Canada’s diverse population. Guidelines are presented in summary, along with case studies in the areas of infectious diseases, mental health, chronic diseases and women’s health.

The resource is entitled “Evidence-based clinical guidelines for immigrants and refugees” and is available from the Canadian Medical Association Journal website (www.cmaj.ca).

here’s a little discussion of a new (for profit) player (Mendeley) in relation to Zotero (open source) … although the blogger says this is not a “Mendeley vs. Zotero smackdown,” if you check out some of the comments, you’ll see some comparisons being made. (Wow - smackdowns in Libraryland!)

What are these funny boxes and why do I need them? – VCC Day QR code workshop

QR codes have emerged as a convenient and useful means of bridging the physical and digital worlds.

QR codes are box-like black and white graphics capable of conveying information when scanned by a smartphone or tablet’s camera and opened by an “app” called a “reader.” These codes can contain all kinds of data, from contact info for individuals and links to websites, as well as tutorials, map locations and much more.

This cyber-workshop will cover the basics of QR codes, including how to generate and read them. We will also discuss creative ways that communities are using the codes to engage members, as well as clients from outside. This enriching technology can be used effectively to augment presentations and resources, adding value to all the usual tools that ensure student success. QR codes can also help boost operational effectiveness by enabling mobile access to procedures and instructions. Lastly, QR codes can be integrated into marketing campaigns, from posters, to business cards, to everything in between.

The use of mobile devices in education and everyday life is increasing exponentially and QR codes will help you exploit the synergies that are possible when digital access to resources is facilitated.
